01

Change the conservation concept and strengthen the management of mangrove protected areas

02

The structure and function of mangrove ecosystem in China are generally stable, but the degradation of mangrove is obvious in some areas.

03

The number of mangrove scientific research results in China ranks first in the world, but the ability to transform the research results into productivity and practice is not strong. The shortage of professional talents in protected areas is prominent, the management level needs to be improved urgently, and a scientific management and monitoring system based on ecosystem management is urgently needed.

04

Beach afforestation is the main way of mangrove restoration in China, which has played an important role in the remarkable increase of mangrove area in the past two decades. However, some key problems still need to be solved quickly.

05

China's existing mangrove restoration afforestation standards, restoration effectiveness evaluation system and funding mechanism are more conducive to mangrove afforestation. Effective measures should be taken to increase the space for natural restoration of mangrove ecosystem.

06

Returning the pond to forest should be the main way of mangrove restoration in China, but the relevant basic theories, techniques, standards and cases are insufficient.

07

The utilization forms of mangrove forests in China are relatively simple, and some sustainable utilization ways that can play the important service functions and ecological values of mangrove ecosystems are still to be developed.

In 2023, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the "Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Project Methodology Afforestation Carbon Sink (CCER-14-001-V01)" and other four methodologies, including the "Voluntary Greenhouse gas Emission Reduction project Methodology Mangrove Construction (CCER-14-002-V01)", indicating the direction for the development of mangrove carbon sink projects.

In November 2018, under the guidance of the Wetland Management Department of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Lao Niu Foundation, the Paulson Institute and Shenzhen Mangrove Wetland Conservation Foundation (MCF) jointly launched the "China Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Strategy Research" project. The project expert group led by Professor Wang Wenqing of Xiamen University completed the Research Report on China's Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Strategy in 18 months, and proposed countermeasures for the protection and restoration of mangrove forests in China.
